The votes will be counted on 6 May and results will be posted on our website as soon as they become available. Airtrack In July 2009 Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL) submitted an application under the Transport and Works Act to provide a new rail link to Heathrow called Airtrack. The intention of the scheme was to link Heathrow with the national rail network to the south and west of the airport. It involved constructing a new line from Terminal 5 southwards to the Windsor line north of Staines, a new section of track in the town centre and other works. The project received significant objections including from Spelthorne Borough Council and a public inquiry was planned to take place – initially in 2010. The project’s implementation was reliant on a significant level of public funding. However, following election of the Coalition Government and a review of government spending, it was clear this would no longer be available. These funding issues, as well as some planning matters that could not be satisfactorily resolved e.g. impact of increased level crossing down times, led to HAL reviewing the project and eventually announcing in early April 2011 their intention to withdraw their Transport and Works Act application. They are now working on other ways of improving rail services to Heathrow. Scores on the Doors An impressive 102 food businesses in Spelthorne have achieved five stars for their ‘Scores on the Doors’ hygiene rating. Under the scheme, cafes, restaurants, pubs, shops and business selling food are given a 'star' rating to show how well they comply with food safety standards. Five stars is the highest rating and zero the lowest. You can check what rating a food business has achieved in the following ways:- check out the Scores on the Doors website (external website) send a text message - type in SOTD, name of the business area (e.g. Staines) and send to 60060.* ask the business directly look in the window or on the door of a restaurant to see if they are displaying a 'Scores on the Doors' sticker or certificate. * Customers must be 16+ and have bill payer's permission. These meetings exist all around the world and across the UK and are a good way to meet people with a like-minded enthusiasm for all things green. It’s a chance to share knowledge and views and work out what issues are worth supporting locally. What we decide to do is up to you. In other words there’s no fixed agenda. So just turn up, find out more and tell us what you think Our aim will be to organise an environmental forum or local environmental group. The event will be organized by Friends of the Earth members, keen to set up a local group here in Spelthorne. Nothing is set in stone, however, the hope is that people will want to contribute their own thoughts and ideas. So if you are concerned about traffic, pollution, the preservation of our green spaces or anything else “green-related” please come along to the meeting on Monday 9 May at The Old Town Hall, Market Square, Staines at 7.30pm. No experience necessary as an enjoyment of singing is the only requirement.. All kinds of music tastes catered for pop, gospel, show tunes, folk songs and more. Come along to the free taster session at Brooklands College, Church Road, Ashford on Thursday 5 May from 6.30-8pm. A ten week course will then start on Thursday the 12 May 6.30-8pm and there will be a very small charge (£1 to £2 per session) to cover administration costs. For more information call 01784 446433 or e-mail leisure@spelthorne.gov.uk Surrey Youth Games The P&G Surrey Youth Games is being held on 18 and 19 June 2011 at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. The Games are the largest annual youth sports festival in Surrey.  This year there are 13 different sports, including two for young people with a disability and 11 Surrey Boroughs and Districts taking part. The games are a great opportunity for children and young people aged 7-15 to try a new sport or improve on existing skills, so why not join Team Spelthorne and try one of our coaching sessions. Staines 10k Unfortunately the Staines 10K road race is now full and we can’t accept anymore entries but come along and support the runners at 9am on Sunday 16 May. The race is organised by Staines Strollers and Runnymede Runners and supported by Spelthorne Borough Council it will start and finish outside the council offices in Knowle Green, Staines. Mondays: Dodge ball (7-8pm) and Football (8-9pm)   Tuesdays: Spelthorne Glee Club (7-8pm) and Urban Dance (8-9pm) Tuesday night sessions will start on 3 May. West Indian cricket in Sunbury The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr John O'Hara, will field a team from Sunbury Cricket Club against the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Eddie Griffith's team of West Indian cricketers on Bank Holiday Monday, 2 May, in a 25 over match starting at 2pm at Sunbury Cricket Club. A steel band will be playing and there will be a grand raffle to raise money for the Mayor's Charity Fund. All are welcome.
