New design for Junior Citizen Handbook

A new cover for the Junior Citizen Handbook has been designed by Chloe Overton from Echelford Primary School in Ashford.

Chloe was the winner in a recent primary schools competition to design a new front cover for the Spelthorne Junior Citizen handbook which is organised annually by the Surrey Police Spelthorne Youth Officers. As a prize, Chloe receives £30 of art equipment for herself and £100 for her school.

New Junior Citizen Handbook
Junior Citizen is an annual event which teaches year six children how to stay safe near water, on the roads and railways and how to avoid danger from strangers. They also receive advice on fire safety, first aid, citizenship and how to make an emergency call. The event has been running for more than ten years and is attended by over 1200 local children each year.

The workbook which will feature Chloe’s design is given to the children to help reinforce the new skills and techniques at home or in the classroom.

Cllr Frank Ayers, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said: “Congratulations to Chloe for creating an excellent design for the Junior Citizen handbook. This booklet will be a valuable addition to the children’s learning experience following their visit to Junior Citizen in September."

Bus Service Review

Surrey County Council has been reviewing the support it gives to public buses, both the main network and the ‘school specials’ that serve some secondary schools. It was clear that the current subsidy of £12m a year net was not sustainable and major savings needed to be made.

In parallel with public consultation, routes have been renegotiated and re-tendered with bus operators. Here are links to an outline of the review and a list of services from September 2010.

Spelthorne Council Planning update

28 Harfield Road, Sunbury

The Planning Inspectorate has upheld the Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for the erection of a detached four bed dwelling to the rear of 28 Harfield Road. The Inspector agreed with the Council that the new house would be at odds with the character of the surrounding area, and would damage the sylvan character of the area. In addition, the scheme would be damaging to the amenities of the Green Belt to the rear and harm the living conditions of neighbouring properties.

The Council also wrote to the Planning Inspectorate in light of new government guidance about garden land, stating that the development was no longer acceptable in principle. The Inspector agreed and concluded that “The change in policy means that the site as garden land is not longer regarded as being a priority for development.”

Land adjacent to 2 Bryan Close, Sunbury

The Planning Inspectorate has upheld the Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for an amendment to a planning permission granted for a new 4 bed dwelling. The Council was concerned that the living conditions on one bedroom was unacceptable and that the increased ridge height was out of character with the local area. Whilst the Inspector did not agree that the height was an issue, he did agree that the poor living conditions did not meet the requirement for a “high standard of design in new development”.

Be aware of bogus security companies

Surrey Police have issued a warning to Spelthorne Residents who receive telephone calls or cold call visits from security companies offering to install free or greatly reduced price intruder alarms in their homes.

Surrey Police believe this is a scam and you should not let anyone into your home or divulge any personal details.

If you are thinking of installing an alarm and require advice please see the Surrey Police website (www.surrey.police.uk) (external website) or contact your local Trading Standards office on 01372 371666 or visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk (external website)

Prevent a fire in your neighbourhood

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is keen to work with residents to prevent a fire from burning the heart out of your community and destroying the place where you live.

They particularly need your help to stop deliberate fires (arson) and hoax calls, which divert resources from where they are really needed.

You can help by:
  • Maintaining communal areas and open spaces keeping them free from rubbish and debris.
  • Reporting any new incidents of graffiti or vandalism to the police or Spelthorne Council. Such acts of anti-social behaviour can often be the start of an arson problem.
  • Informing us when properties in the area become vacant, especially whilst awaiting demolition or refurbishment. Unsecured, derelict or unoccupied buildings attract anti-social behaviour increasing the potential of an arson attack.  The safety of our fire crews is put at risk when attending fires in these types of buildings.
  • Notifying Spelthorne Council of any abandoned vehicles in your neighbourhood so they can be removed before they become a target for arsonists.
  • Listening out and acting if you hear a neighbour’s smoke alarm. You could help them in case they are out, asleep or possibly even save their life if they have been injured. If you are in any doubt call 999. Please don’t ignore it or leave any length of time before you call, we will always attend calls made with good intent.
  • Report all fires in your neighbourhood however small, even if it has been extinguished, we need to know if there are incidents in your neighbourhood so we can address them.
You can contact Surrey Fire and Rescue Service on 01737 242444 or for a free home fire safety check call 0800 085 0767 or visit www.surrey-fire.gov.uk/besmartbesafe (external website)
