P&G Surrey Youth Games Do you know anyone who may be interested in Golf Xtreme or Boy’s Basketball for this year’s P & G Surrey Youth Games? The P & G Surrey Youth Games coaching sessions are well underway and going well for most sports but we need more athletes for Golf Xtreme and Boys Basketball. We are already working closely with schools through the School Sport Partnership to try and recruit more young people. Do you know a young person age 11-14 in school years 7, 8 or 9 who may be interested in either of these sports? If so please pass this information onto them. Golf Xtreme is a mixed sport so we need to recruit boys and girls for this. It’s great fun and is an indoor version of crazy golf/pitch and putt. All the equipment is provided and a fully qualified golf coach is delivering the sessions so no previous experience is required. The sessions take place at Sunbury Leisure Centre Mondays 6-7pm on 10 May, 24 May, 7 June and 14 June. Boys Basketball takes place at Spelthorne Leisure Centre Saturday’s 3-5pm on the following dates; 1 May, 15 May, 22 May and 29 May. We run these sessions in partnership with Spelthorne Atoms basketball club and the coaches are fully qualified. Beginners are welcome so why not give it a try!! Give it a Grow this Compost Awareness Week ‘Give it a Grow’ is the message being put out by Recycle Now to mark the tenth annual Compost Awareness Week, running from 2-8 May 2010. This year, the Recycle Now campaign and Spelthorne Borough Council are encouraging us all to try our hand at new composting activities in order to do our bit for the environment. Although around thirty percent of us already compost at home, there are lots more things we can all try. Here are just some of the things we could all try this Compost Awareness Week. New to composting? Why not give composting a go. Anyone with outside space can compost at home. Order a home composting bin from only £14 at www.surreycc.gov.uk/getcomposting or call 0844 571 4444. Already a compost champion? Think about additional things you could compost, such as eggs shells, tea bags or even the contents from your vacuum cleaner. Don’t know what to do with your compost? Try using your homemade compost to enrich your borders or to give your potted plants and containers an extra boost Ever tried peat-free compost? It’s made from recycled materials - and that’s good news for the environment because it helps to cut down the amount of organic waste that is sent to landfill Fancy being a wormery wonder? Wormeries are ideal for people who don’t produce garden waste or have limited outside space. Small amounts of garden waste can go into a wormery, together with some cooked food scraps.   For more information on home composting please contact Mark Rachwal on 01784 446440 Tackling drink driving The Surrey Road Safety Partnership and Surrey Crimestoppers are teaming up to tackle drink driving this summer - after figures show 10% of Surrey calls to the independent crime-fighting charity are reporting suspected drink drivers. On average nearly four people a month are killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads as a result of drivers who are impaired mainly by drink but also drugs. To support the national Drink Drive campaign, which launched on 1 June, the partnership – which also includes Surrey Police and Surrey County Council – and Crimestoppers are reminding drivers not to flout the law and put lives at risk by drinking and driving. Kevin Morris, Surrey Crimestoppers, said:  “One in ten of the anonymous calls we receive are about drink driving from people who are concerned enough to want the police to have the information but are too worried to step forward and talk directly to the police themselves.” Inspector Chris Colley, Surrey Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “We don’t want to stop people enjoying themselves but ask drivers to think about leaving the car at home if they want to drink. As well as running the risk of killing or seriously injuring themselves or others, drink drivers also risk arrest, a court appearance and if convicted a fine, disqualification, a criminal record and they may go to prison.” Surrey Police vigorously enforces the drink-drive law and is committed to reducing both the number of road traffic collisions and the number and severity of casualties, working together with Surrey County Council, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and the Highways Agency as part of the Surrey Road Safety Partnership.   If you have information about someone driving under the influence of drink or drugs you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and they will pass the details on to the police for you.  Nobody, not even Crimestoppers, will know it was you who called.
