planning clinics
The family planning clinics are free and confidential to both men and
women of all ages. They offer advice and provide supplies of all methods of contraception, including
free condoms, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and sex related advice. Please phone before

Sexually transmitted infections
If you have any worries about having unprotected sex and sexually transmitted
disease you can contact a health advisor based at a Genito-urinary Medicine Clinic (GUM clinic). They
offer free confidential advice, counselling and treatment of all sexually transmitted infections and
other genital conditions. Pre and post HIV counselling and HIV tests are also available. Emergency
contraception is also available from these clinics. You can book yourself and appointment and
do not need to see your doctor first. Confidentiality is guaranteed by law in GUM/STI clinics and no
information about you is passed out of the clinic without your permission. To find you nearest

Advice regarding HIV and AIDs
The Terrence Higgins Trust (THT)
(external website) delivers health promotion campaigns, national and local services directly to people
with, or affected by, HIV and people at risk. They provide advice and support if you are living with
HIV, know someone who is, or think you might be at risk of HIV.
National AIDS Helpline (external
website) is a free, confidential 24 hour service (will not be shown on your phone bill), to give support,
advice and information on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. Telephone: 0800 012322.
Need someone to talk to?
Youth Counselling Service (external
website) offers a free and confidential short term counselling service for young people age 12-24. Counselling
is available for various issues including relationships, families, drugs, pregnancy, sexuality, stress,
bullying, feeling low, depression or anything else that worries you. The service is provided by the
Health Promotion Service. You can contact them by phoning 0845 600 2516 (an answerphone is available)
or e-mail.
