Up to 13 weeks

If you are in Hospital for a period less than 13 weeks - there is no need to worry you will NOT lose Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit.

But

If you are in hospital for a period EXCEEDING 13 weeks and you are a single person, you will have your benefits “downrated” - if you are in receipt of a state pension or income support, it will be reduced to a personal allowance. Your housing benefit/council tax benefit is also reduced because the allowance you receive is lowered. These reductions are set by Central Government.

If your partner is in hospital the “downrating” will take place and Housing and Council Tax benefit will reduce as well.

You may ask for discretionary housing payments to be made if you can demonstrate “hardship” due to the downrating rules. You should appeal in writing, to the Principal Benefit Officer.

Please remember you must notify your local Council Offices if you go into hospital.
