Description: To qualify as a candidate for a local election, you must satisfy the following criteria on the day you are nominated and on polling day. You must have attained the age of at least 21 years; and be a British citizen, a citizen of another Commonwealth country, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of another member state of the European Union. You must also meet at least one of the following four qualifications you are registered as a local government elector for the local authority area in which you wish to stand; or you have been an owner or tenant of any land or premises in the local authority area during the whole of the 12 months before the date you are nominated; or your main or only place of work during the last 12 months has been in the local authority area; or you have lived in the local authority area during the whole of the last 12 months. Once the Notice of Election has been published, you can become a candidate. If you are eligible, you will need to complete a set of nomination papers and submit them to the Returning Officer. In order for your nomination as a candidate to be valid, you must also formally give your consent to nomination in writing. It is your choice if you want to stand as an independent candidate or have no description on the ballot paper. However if you want to stand as a candidate for a registered political party, you will have to gain the permission of the political party before doing this, or, alternatively, you can establish a new registered party for which you will have to complete appropriate documentation.
