Spelthorne Borough Council has commissioned an established artist, John Atkin, to design and construct a sculpture, for display on Wraysbury Road, Staines.

An area of land, known locally as Pound Mill, has recently been landscaped to provide a green open space.  Its location, next to the Wraysbury River, presents an ideal place for a stunning sculpture.

History of Pound Mill

In the past, the land has formed part of a parish pound, a mustard mill and Staines West train station.

During the 19th and early 20th century the mill was used for milling mustard and was one of the main industries and employers in the town.  The mill was closed in the early 1900s and remained disused, until it was bought by the Linoleum Manufacturing Company and demolished.

The old Staines West train station was built next to the mill in 1885.  The mill-owners house was purchased by the train company and refurbished as the main train station building.  It was closed in 1965 and the platforms were demolished soon after.  The platforms and tracks have since been replaced with a residential area.

The main station building is still intact and has been converted to an office, which now overlooks the newly landscaped open space.  To the rear of the office, a display platform with cast iron supports marks the original use of the building

Funding

The area was landscaped as part of the Two Rivers development.  The artwork was funded by the developers of the scheme.
