Youth Shelters have been put into the parks as part of an initiative to engage the young people in Spelthorne.  Various consultations with young people have highlighted a need for a place for the young people to go, which they can call their own.  The young people were aware of the youth clubs but did not want to go to these venues.  In response to this, we recognised that the young people would be spending their time in the parks and so, by providing a focal point for this, it helped to keep the young people safe and allowed them to have a space in the parks away from the other park users.  The young people in question will not, in the main, engage with the youth service and it is important for them to have somewhere for them to meet up.  This creates a sense of belonging for the young people in society and so helps in a small way to engage them.    As teenagers, it is natural for them to want to meet away from the presence of adults.
