Youth Awards 2007 winners

Over 40 young people from Spelthorne were rewarded by their peers for their contribution to the Spelthorne community at the 2007 Spelthorne Youth Awards.

World Cup Gold Medallist and Paralympic Gold Medallist Giles Long MBE was the special guest speaker at the awards, and presented six young people with outstanding achievement awards, as well as giving the 300 strong audience an insight into the life of a world champion swimmer.

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Malcolm Royer, presented certificates of achievement to 43 young people.  Giles Long then presented the Achievement Awards and a cheque for £50 to six individuals for their outstanding achievements.

The award winners were:

Alex Stabler – Personal Achievement
Andrew Horgan – Sporting Achievement
Nicholas D’Sousa – Academic Achievement
Bobby Williams – Community Spirit
Susanna Morris – Special Award
Ryan Bishop – Special Award

Alex suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, but this has not stopped him from pursing his goals; he not only swims, but also plays powerchair football and will also be representing Spelthorne at the Surrey Youth Games in the Sport of Boccia.
Andrew has been a keen golfer since the age of five.  His neighbour put him forward for a trial at Wentworth, with the possibility of obtaining a scholarship.  Andrew was short listed from over 100 applications and now continues his training weekly at the Wentworth Golf Club.
Nicholas D’Sousa has received this award for his recent entry into a Young writers poetry competition, which has seen his poem chosen for publication.

Bobby has been raising money for the “Miles for Muscles Campaign”.  The Campaign aims to raise money to support boys and young men, like himself who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a severe genetic muscle wasting disease.

Susanne has worked hard at school to achieve excellent GCSE grades, despite being dyslexic.  In addition Susanne has competed regionally in gymnastic competitions, winning several medals, and has now gone on to coach gymnastics, voluntarily to local children.  Susanne has also been to Romania with supplies sourced from local businesses to help Romanian school children.

At the age of 12, Ryan was diagnosed with Leukaemia and had to undertake three years of chemotherapy. Despite missing a huge amount of lessons, Ryan managed to catch up and obtained 10 GCSE’s at A grade.  Ryan was concerned that his illness would affect his love of basketball, but once his treatment was finished he returned to playing, is now a qualified coach and is also president of the basketball club at his university.

The fifth Spelthorne Youth Awards were organised by Spelthorne Youth Council in partnership with Spelthorne Borough Council.  Enterainment was provided by dancers from the Urban Dance School and from a drama group and band from Thamesmead School.

Entertainment was provided by a performance of street dance by dancers from the Urban Dance School and from a drama group and band from Thamesmead School.
