Thanks to the generosity of British Airways, the 2008 Spelthorne Junior Citizen event will be held at their Community Learning Centre in Harmondsworth.
All 21 Primary Schools in the Borough will be sending their Year 6 children and we will welcome over 1000 children during the two weeks that we will be operating.
Every September young people from schools across Spelthorne take part in this event. Various workshops will be held to help the pupils learn to stay safe near water, on the roads and railways and how to avoid potential danger from strangers, social networking sites and chat rooms. Other workshops will teach fire safety, first aid, citizenship and how to correctly make an emergency call.
Brian Kingston, Spelthorne Council’s Anti Social Behaviour Officer and Coordinator of Junior Citizen commented: “Junior Citizen is an excellent way of equipping young people with the knowledge they need to deal with potentially dangerous situations. We have also introduced a new workshop this year which focuses on the danger of speaking to strangers online.”
Cllr Denise Grant, Portfolio Holder for Young People and Cultural Services added: “Junior Citizen provides a unique opportunity to communicate important safety messages to all the 11 year olds in the Borough and the workshops have been specifically designed to get the information across to the young people in a way which is interesting and relevant to them.”
