Spelthorne’s Safer, Stronger Partnership has received an award from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service for its close working with the Service and in particular the Partnership’s support for the Surrey Fire and Rescue “Youth Engagement Scheme” (YES).

YES is a five day practical programme based at Walton Fire Station for young people aged between 14-17. The Scheme aims to aid personal development and address antisocial behaviour in the community, including fire and vehicle related crime. YES is part of an intervention package which can last up to three months and is delivered in partnership with the Surrey Youth Justice Service.

The course is accredited by the National Open College Network and provides three credits towards the access of other courses, such as the Public Service course. At their graduation on day five the young people give a display to parents and other invited guests, showing what they have learned and achieved in just one week. They are also presented with a certificate signed by the Chief Fire Officer to mark their achievement.

Roberto Tambini, Chief Executive of Spelthorne Borough Council and Chairman of the Partnership said: “We are delighted to have received this award. We have an excellent partnership with the Fire and Rescue Service and this particular scheme is an innovative one designed to provide positive guidance to young people and help reduce antisocial behaviour in our Borough”.
