Last weekend Spelthorne residents were treated to a number of events which celebrated the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Approximately 1000 people visited The Lammas Park on Saturday to take part in the Summer Fun Fest. With a sports and cultural theme in mind, attendees were able to participate in taster sessions such as aerobics, boccia, tennis, football and canoeing as well as taking in the musical and theatrical talents of local individuals and groups who put on performances.

Cllr Denise Grant, Portfolio Holder for Young People and Culture said: “We very much hope that the spirit of the Olympic Games will encourage more residents to participate in recreational activities such as those on offer today. We linked the taster sessions in with the local sports and arts groups so if any residents enjoyed a particular taster session they will be able to continue that activity with a local club”.

As well as the Summer Fun Fest, Spelthorne Council also organised two Discovering Places guided walks in partnership with the Walking for Health Scheme and Spelthorne Museum. Over 60 people participated in the walks which were part of a UK campaign that aims to give participants the opportunity to discover, explore and be inspired by hidden gems, historic buildings, public and natural buildings.

Over 40 people also participated in 90 minute long Sailing taster sessions organised by the Queen Mary Sailing Club which ran throughout Saturday and Sunday.
