Junior school children have the chance to give their views on facilities for young people in Spelthorne when they visit the Borough Council offices at Knowle Green on Friday, November 30th.
The Council are hosting a group of 36 children aged between seven and 11 from the 18 Junior Schools in the Borough in an event jointly organised with the Spelthorne Junior School Federation.
Each junior school has been asked to consider leisure facilities and activities in Spelthorne and send two representatives to give the children's views on what they would like to see in the Borough in the future. The Council's Head of Leisure Services, Liz Borthwick, will be in attendance to hear the views of the children and to consider them as part of the Borough Leisure and Culture Plan.
The school children will also tour the Council Offices, meet the Chief Executive, Michael Taylor, hear something about the history of Spelthorne and take part in a quiz.
The Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Vic Drinkwater, will be chairing the session, which will be held in the Council Chamber.
Chairman of the Federation and Head at Spelthorne Junior School, John Clarke, says:
"This is a great opportunity for the children to be introduced to citizenship at an early age. It will also give them the chance to put forward their views on a topic of great interest to them and reinforce the idea that, despite their age, they will be listened to and their views taken into consideration."
Councillor Denise Grant, the Council's Portfolio Holder for Young People, said
"This event builds upon the successful Student Council and represents another initiative by the Council to obtain and act upon the views of young people. We hope to repeat this exercise in due course with other topics such as the environment and safety issues."
