Crime in Spelthorne is falling according to recent figures published by Surrey Police.

Police figures revealed a drop of 9.8% for all crime in Spelthorne for the period April 2007 – January 2008.  There had been significant falls in theft of motor vehicle (16%) and theft from motor vehicle (27%) and criminal damage (24%).

This latest set of figures also revealed that all recorded crime had been falling consistently during 2007, with monthly figures for all crime up to December 2007, down by 50%, compared to figures published in January 2007.

The Spelthorne Safer Stronger Partnership, which is the community safety partnership in Spelthorne consisting of Surrey Police, Spelthorne Borough Council, Surrey County Council, Surrey Primary Care Trust and Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, has introduced a number of initiatives to help tackle crime in Spelthorne.

These include funding for radios for the Staines shop safe scheme, which gives instant contact for retailers to the CCTV control room in the event of an incident, providing graffiti kits and funding for the expansion of the Spelthorne Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, funding for the upgrade of some of the CCTV cameras in Spelthorne, funding for ramps for car parks in Shepperton, Sunbury and Laleham to prevent anti social driving and funding for a Handyperson service to install locks and other security measures in the homes of elderly people.

Speaking about the latest crime statistics, Roberto Tambini, Chief Executive of Spelthorne Borough Council and Chair of the Spelthorne Safer Stronger Partnership Board said:

“The Partnership is delighted with the latest performance figures. We are committed to making Spelthorne safer for the whole community. We are not complacent and will continue to work hard with our partners to sustain and further improve our performance”

Surrey Police Superintendent for Spelthorne Jerry Westerman added:

“I am extremely encouraged by the latest crime figures for Spelthorne. It is particularly heartening to see the considerable reduction in thefts of and from motor vehicles which has been a particular priority for the Partnership.

“However, we cannot allow this latest success to make us any less determined to make Spelthorne even safer. We also know from listening to local communities that these figures only tell part of the story, so we will use this as a springboard for action to further reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.”
