Date April 2006
Aims The Council wanted to consult residents about:
  • small scale improvements to their local area
  • the financial information it provides in its annual Council Tax leaflet.
Methodology The Council commissioned GFK NOP to carry out six 2 hour focus groups with residents. These groups included residents from different areas, and of different ages and socio-economic groups.
Main Findings Residents found it difficult to focus on minor improvements to local areas, as these were not seen as a priority. It was the major issues that caused most concern. However, minor improvements that would be perceived as making a difference revolved around the positive aspects of living in their local area e.g. community places, green spaces and well used local environments.

In terms of how the Council provides financial information, the research suggested there is potential to simplify understanding and engage interest using a range of methods, including more visually presented information, layman's terms, case studies and concise information.
