Fear of Crime Household Survey
Date April - May 2002
Aims This survey was conducted to help the Spelthorne Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership (comprising the Borough Council, County Council and Surrey Police) gain a clearer picture of local residents’ views on crime. The results were used to develop a Crime & Disorder Reduction Strategy for 2002 – 2005.
Methodology The survey was carried out in accordance with Home Office Guidelines. A self completion postal survey was distributed to over 5,000 randomly selected households across the borough.
Overview Questions were included on crime prevention, fear of crime, crime reporting, satisfaction with policing and future improvements.
Response rate A 45% response rate was achieved
Main findings There is low fear of crime in Spelthorne and a high level of satisfaction with policing. Domestic burglary and vehicle crime are the most common fears, and the top 2 improvements residents would most like to see are a more visible police presence and more CCTV.
Additional Information Consultation work is currently underway to help inform a Strategy for 2005-08
