Equality means a person's right to access information, services, employment and training without being treated less favourably because of their age, gender, disability, ethnic origin, nationality, family/marital status, sexual orientation, religion or belief or any other differences.
Diversity means accepting that people are individuals and are different in terms of age, gender, disability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, belief and class.
The Council's commitment
The Council is committed to providing equality of opportunity, tackling unfair discrimination and promoting good relations between groups regardless of age, gender, disability, ethnic origin, nationality, sexual orientation or religious belief in the way we deliver services and as an employer and training provider.
Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
In particular, we have a duty to promote race equality under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. The Act requires us to produce a Race Equality Scheme which outlines how we will promote race equality, eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and promote good race relations. The Act requires us to review our scheme by 31 May 2005. We have now reviewed our list of policies and functions relevant to the race equality duty and have scheduled each in order of priority for action over the next three years.
