| Aims | As part of work to development a Youth Strategy for the Borough, the Council carried out an extensive programme of consultation with young people, service providers and also the parents of young people. In particular, the Council was keen to find out from parents what they thought the key issues for young people in Spelthorne were, how satisfied they were with the current provision of youth services and what improvements they would like to see. |
| Methodology | The Council commissioned Conquest Research, an independent market research company, to carry out a series of focus groups with the parents of young people aged 11 to 17. These included a mix of parents from different areas of the Borough, of both genders and with children of a range of ages. |
| of Findings |
Overall, parents felt that having the right services locally was crucial, but their spontaneous perception was that this was not currently the case. This was partly due to a lack of awareness of services currently available, plus a rejection of services that were either not in their home town, or that were inaccessible by a safe form of transport (other than their own car). They also felt that some of the current services could be replaced by other services that would fit more closely with what they perceived their teenagers to need.
