Eco Park for Charlton Lane Surrey Waste Management (a wholly owned subsidiary of SITA UK) is working on behalf of Surrey County Council to develop an Eco Park at Charlton Lane, Shepperton. It will incorporate a range of waste treatment facilities; an innovation centre to look at the latest technologies, research and development and an education centre which will be open to all. Among the features will be:
The Eco Park will be energy self sufficient using surplus heat from the processes and electricity generated from the digester and gasification processes. A planning application is likely to be submitted by the end of October and, if granted, the Eco Park could open in early 2013. For further information please contact Surrey County Council on 03456 009 009 or visit Surrey County Council’s website (external website). View Surrey County Council's most recent press release about the Eco Park (external website) *anaerobic digestion systems use natural processes to break down food waste in the absence of oxygen to produce methane gas which can be used as a fuel for the production of electricity. ** In a gasifier, waste is heated to produce a gas, which can then be burned cleanly at high temperatures to provide energy in a similar way to natural gas, but with the added benefit of creating electricity and heat for use on the site or in the case of electricity, exporting any excess to the grid. |

Energy Efficiciency projects at Spelthorne Council Spelthorne Council has recently taken a number of steps to help save energy and reduce costs in Council owned buildings. The Council is working with Salix Finance, a government funded company that helps public sector bodies to become more energy efficient, to finance the projects. At the offices in Knowle Green, the loft and walls have been insulated to prevent heat loss and reduce heating costs. Energy efficient lighting, a voltage optimiser and switch off control panels for all computers and printers have also been introduced to reduce electricity usage at both the Knowle Green Offices and the White House Depot in Staines. At the Tothill multi-storey car park in Staines, re-wiring and lighting upgrades have taken place and a more robust lighting system has been installed to reduce the occurrence of faults and reduce maintenance costs. At the Greeno Day Centre in Shepperton, energy efficiency lighting and heating controls are currently being installed. Possible future projects include draught proofing of the Knowle Green Offices and lighting upgrades at the Elmsleigh multi-storey and Bridge Street car parks. We are currently gathering data for all the energy saving initiatives and will be able to publish details of the savings in the coming months. |
