That’s better! Neighbourhood Grants boost for local groups

Tents for sea cadets, a new youth shelter and a mobile farm visit for toddlers are among the most recent community projects made possible by the generosity of Spelthorne Councillors.

Each of the Borough’s 39 ward councillors has a £650 Better Neighbourhood Grant, to give to their chosen causes – a total of £25,350 in the current financial year.

So far, Sunbury & Walton Sea Cadets have been given cash to spend on camp beds, courtesy of Cllrs Sider, Leighton and Hyams, who have also paid towards Shepperton Girlguiding’s centenary celebrations.

Helping foot the bill for a new youth shelter at Feltham  Hill Park are three Ashford Common members – Cllrs Trussler, Bouquet and Ayers.

Home-Start Spelthorne was the charity of choice for Cllr Jean Pinkerton, who gave her entire allocation of £650, while Cllr Isobel Napper has put cash towards a visit by Miller’s Ark mobile farm to nursery groups in Lower Sunbury.

Anyone whose cause could do with a cash boost is invited to approach their ward councillors and request support from the Better Neighbourhood Grants fund. There is still more than £22,000 available.

To be eligible for a grant, the cause or project has to meet certain criteria such as being of benefit to Spelthorne residents and supporting the Council’s priorities – ward councillors have all the details.

Spelthorne Council's Planning update

Majestic House application

A major application to develop the former Majestic House site in Staines High Street for offices, housing, leisure, retail and a public piazza was considered at the Council’s Planning Committee meeting on 23 June. Related documents are available on our website.

At the meeting, Councillors approved the scheme subject to the developer agreeing to deliver specified improvement to the area. Once built it will deliver a wide range of benefits to the community. Councillors were particularly keento  ensure that the affordable housing would be delivered and asked for this matter come back to them for consideration prior to any start of work on site.

400 Staines Road West (external website)

An appeal against the refusal of planning permission for 400 Staines Road West has been dismissed. The proposal was for the erection of a two storey block of flats (containing two two-bedroom flats) and an extension to existing block of flats to provide a further three flats. The Inspector concluded that the proposal would be over dense and would be out of character with the lower density housing in the surrounding area. In addition, it was considered that the lack of space between buildings would be out of keeping with the spacious quality and modest sized buildings in the area.

Spelthorne Employment and Development Trends - June 2010

This fact sheet (Word 239kb) provides information on employment and housing development trends in the Borough.  Please note the unemployment figure is based on the monthly claimant count figures, which measure only those people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA).  The claimant count is normally a lower figure than those seeking work because some unemployed people are not entitled to claim unemployment related benefits or choose not to do so.
