Did you know?
Spelthorne’s Antisocial Behaviour Officer, together with A2 Dominion and local Police, have arranged a series of activities for the local children and young people. This is to tackle low level youth disorder and ball games in the street at Beards Road, Ashford.
The young people will have to “earn” these by cleaning up their street and agreeing to take responsibility for their behaviour. With their parents/guardians they will also sign “good neighbour agreements” to collectively agree standards of behaviour and respect.
Activities:

Planning meeting with residents to organise a street party |
|
Thu 20 Aug
|
Use Skills Bus to offer some basic carpentry training to local young people
|
|
Wed 26 Aug
|
Meet up to sign good neighbour agreements and issue Acceptable Behaviour Contracts where necessary

Incentives for attendance, effort and good behaviour include a motor cycle trials taster and football coaching by Reading FC staff.
Again, street football is the main issue at Kingston Crescent, Ashford and A2 Dominion (lead), Spelthorne Council and Surrey Police will adopt the above approach with same aims, objectives and rewards.
At Peregrine Road, Sunbury the issue is low level youth disorder. A number of streetmeets have been held, and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) issued against main offenders. Since joint action was undertaken calls to Police have decreased significantly. Over 20 good neighbour agreements have been signed.
More ABCs have been issued to local youth around Lime Crescent and Markway in Sunbury. Local youth behaviour is being monitored and a meeting is planned shortly to sign more good neighbour agreements.

Spelthorne Walking for Health Scheme
Short walks between 1-3½ miles for adults in Spelthorne and the surrounding area. All walks are designed for beginners or those who want to become more active.
There are two daytime weekday walks of varying lengths each week throughout the year and occasional Saturday walks and evening walks in the summer.
All walks are led by experienced volunteers. There is always a front and back leader to ensure that all walkers can take part at their ‘own pace’. If there is a café or pub nearby, leaders and walkers often stop for a drink and a chat after the walk. Everyone welcome!!
Further information, programmes and registration forms are available from Leisure Services on 01784 446433 or leisure@spelthorne.gov.uk
MEND
MEND (‘Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!’) is a national programme for children age 7-13 who would like to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It’s free and fun and will help children become fitter, healthier and happier!
The programme consists of twice weekly sessions for 10 weeks (two hours per session) and includes:
- weekly games and activities
- interactive sessions that teach parents easy effective ways to improve their children's behaviour and self confidence
- practical demonstrations and tips about healthy food as well as a supermarket tour and a chance to try delicious new foods
The scheme requires the commitment of a parent/guardian to attend all the sessions with the children and to help them carry out what they have learnt at home.
For more information on the scheme go to www.mendprogramme.org. The next programme starts on 14th September, so for more information and to see if your child qualifies for the scheme based on age, weight and health contact Leisure Services on 01784 446433 or email leisure@spelthorne.gov.uk.
"Good News for Polar Bears" recycling site
A not-for-profit eco-website www.GoodNewsForPolarBears.org just launched in Spelthorne to help us all recycle more, reduce waste and landfill, and conserve raw materials. The website is the brainchild of a local businessman in response to a problem he saw:
“I realised that a lot of people are dumping perfectly good items while others were in the high street buying the exact same goods! It seemed like such a waste. Many of those buying new would have been perfectly happy with a used item for free, and many of those dumping stuff would've been over the moon to have someone take it off their hands and put it to good use”
The free website lets people list items they no longer need, as well as search the site and set e-mail alerts for things they need. When a match is found, members say they 'want it' and a deal is sealed, with no money changing hands. Many of us have things we're hoarding that we no longer use or need, while others in our community are in need.
Every important initiative starts with a small step - please help us support a great cause, cut waste, increase recycling, and conserve raw materials in Spelthorne – Join up now for free, and de-clutter your life whilst helping others in your community.
