Surrey Police Authority fights budget cuts

You may know from media reports that Surrey Police is facing budget cuts as a result of years of under-funding and a Government decision to cap the amount of money Surrey Police Authority (SPA) is allowed to raise this year. This capping will mean cuts to front line policing services you receive and less resource available to keep Surrey the safest county in England.

There is a short fact sheet (Pdf 42kb), which gives you the background. Surrey Police Authority and Surrey Police are very worried by the prospect of having to make cuts; the Authority is fighting for sensible future funding of policing in Surrey. Details of the SPA campaign along with an online petition can be found on the Surrey Police Authority web site at www.surreypa.gov.uk.

Preventing insects in wheelie bins

When the weather gets hot, the amount of food thrown away is an important factor. As much as possible should be composted or put in a food digester which can rot everything down. If this can’t be done, then thorough wrapping is essential, preferably double wrapping and then putting in the rubbish bin making sure the lid is closed. Leaving food waste exposed to air means that flies can easily be attracted to it, so avoid this.  Further advice is available on the rubbish and recycling pages.

Community celebration to mark regeneration milestone

Residents of an estate in Stanwell which is being transformed under a £50 million regeneration scheme were invited to a special celebration to mark the start of the demolition works.  The community event took place on 28 May and follows the beginning of the first phase of Stanwell NewStart, a regeneration project to replace 164 homes, over four phases, with 360 new flats and houses.  The residents were treated to face painting and enterainment laid on for children as well as a hog roast and other refreshments.

A2Dominion Group is working in partnership with Spelthorne Council, other organisations and residents, on the regeneration project, set for completion in 2012.  Willbea Demolition Ltd began its work on 11 May to flatten 13 homes in Victory Close to make way for 52 new properties in the area.  The project will involve houses around Explorer Avenue, Mulberry Avenue, Holywell Way, Holywell Close, Longford Avenue, Laburnham Way and Long Lane being replaced with new homes built to the Decent Homes standards.  An Extra Care facility and Community Centre will be included in the redeveloped area.  In addition to the new houses, local community facilities will be improved, for instance, a new health centre with additional services, a community cafe and library.
