Twentieth anniversary of twinning with Melun
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Spelthorne’s twinning with Melun in France. To celebrate, the Chief Executive, Mayor, Leader of the Council, councillors and local business representatives travelled to Melun on 7 May to take part in a variety of celebratory events.
These were followed by a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels on 9 May where a Charter was signed to commemorate the 20th anniversary. Everyone who took part in the trip contributed towards the costs.
Thanks to generous donations by our sponsors, BP, Lotus Landscapes, Steria and Myers Catering, a special conference will also be hosted in Spelthorne in July. The event will cover economic development and regeneration, offering further opportunities for the development of business links. There will be representatives from the Japan Local Government and our other twin town, Grand Port Savanne in Mauritius.

Raising the roof
The 7th Ashford Scout Group can put a new roof on their leaky hall, thanks to a grant funded by Heathrow Community and Environment Awards in partnership with Groundwork Thames Valley. The grant means the work will get underway in August when the thriving group of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are on holiday.
|
|
The work was prompted by the fact that patch-up repairs were failing to stop the asbestos roof leaking. The extreme winter weather meant the end for the ageing roof and funds were desperately needed to replace the roof before the next winter.
The roof was part of the original ‘Dunford Hall’, which was opened on 23 January 1971. Emma Clare, Committee member for the group said: “This grant is fantastic news for not only the Scout group but also the wider community who use the hall. We can now positively plan for our future”.
The Heathrow Community and Environment Awards are a source of support for schools, voluntary organisations, community groups and local authorities. Grants will be made to local community projects focusing on five themes, ‘reduce, re-use, recycle; climate change and energy; protecting and enhancing our environment; bringing communities together and developing skills’.
