Credit referencing and certificates of residence

If you have been told that your name is not showing on the electoral register please check with the electoral services office first as it may be that whoever has told you this has out of date information or is unable to find your address.

If you require proof that your name is showing on the electoral register, please check with the electoral services office first to ensure your name is included, if it is not you will need to complete an electoral registration form. Once we have confirmed that you are registered we can issue you with a certificate of residence. There is a charge for this of £15 per person. Payment can be made by cash or cheque and letters will be posted to the address or you can collect in person provided you are able to produce proof of ID.

The certificate will state that you are registered at the address you are resident at and will give your elector number. Usually if you need to prove that you are on the electoral register, then this is sufficient. If you need the certificate to state how long you have been at an address, you will need to let the elections office know before the certificate is generated.

Consumer Contact details for Credit Reference Agencies

The council is required by law to supply a copy of the electoral register to registered credit reference agencies, provided they pay for the information. This is supplied for prevention of credit fraud and helps companies to quickly confirm your name and address. It means that they can check that people live at the address they give when applying for credit. Please bear in mind that if the council adds you to the register, although the data is sent to credit reference agencies when the register is published, it can take some time for the credit reference agency to update their records.
