Who is entitled to vote?
Citizens of the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and the countries listed below are eligible to be registered as electors provided other conditions are met. Below is a list of the Commonwealth, British Dependent Territories and European Union countries whose citizens are eligible to be registered. European Union citizens can only vote in local elections or European elections (provided they make a declaration that they will not vote in their home country.

** Many Hong Kong citizens already posses British Citizenship and are eligible for registration. However the majority of Hong Kong citizens were previously British Dependent Territory (BDT) citizens until Hong Kong ceased to be a BDT on 1 July 1997. They will now be classed as British Nationals (overseas) or British Overseas citizens - both terms fall within the meaning of Commonwealth citizens as defined by the British Nationality Act 1981 and are eligible for registration.
