Whilst Spelthorne Council will provide a limited number of sandbags during a flood, they will be preferentially offered to those most vulnerable, therefore it is advisable to identify alternative sources from which to acquire sandbags - builders' merchants and local DIY stores may stock sandbags and sand.

Sandbags will offer only limited protection and should only be used as a last resort when other measures are not in place - the array of products listed by the National Flood Forum are likely to protect your home more effectively than sandbags.

If it is necessary to protect your home with sandbags, make sure you familiarise yourself with how to build a sandbag wall - the Environment Agency provides a useful guide for this. As well as blocking openings into your home, sandbags can be used to weigh down manhole covers and garden furniture, and when placed in sinks, toilets and bath drains can help prevent 'backed up' water from entering the home.
