Abandoned vehicles

We aim to investigate reports of an abandoned vehicle within three working days. If it is confirmed as abandoned, we will remove it.

We are unable to investigate vehicles if:

  • they are taxed and in roadworthy condition (check to see if a vehicle is taxed at https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax)

  • they have been on public land or the highway for less than a month (unless the vehicle has signs of accident damage)

Please note that vehicles subject to arson are scenes of crime and should be reported to the police.

Dangerous or obstructive vehicles

The police are responsible for the removal of vehicles dangerously or obstructively parked. Our Parking Team can help if the vehicle is obstructing an entrance with a dropped kerb.

Untaxed but not abandoned vehicles

We cannot remove a vehicle because it is untaxed. Vehicles in a reasonable condition but untaxed or declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and parked on a public highway can be reported to the DVLA for action by them.

Reporting an abandoned vehicle

Please call us or complete our abandoned vehicles form with following information:

  • location
  • make
  • colour
  • vehicle registration
  • how long the vehicle has been there

How we will respond

A member of staff will check the vehicle and attempt to contact the registered keeper. If there is no response from the registered keeper and the vehicle is not removed after a reasonable period of time our authorised contractor will dispose of it.
