Record number of finishers at Staines 10K

The Mayor of Spelthorne Cllr Vivienne Leighton got runners underway for the 2018 Staines 10K on Sunday 13 May.

The race, organised by Staines Strollers and Runnymede Runners, with support from Spelthorne Borough Council, saw a record 657 runners completing the course. The men's race was won by Stephen Blake from Woking Athletics Club who finished well ahead of the field in a time of 32 minutes 44 seconds. The women's race was won by Cordelia Parker who completed the course in 36 minutes 52 seconds.

This year's event was supported by over 70 volunteers, with the drinks stations provided by young people from 1st Shepperton Guides. Laleham Camera Club became involved for the first time and created a substantial album of photos. There was great support along the course with many local residents cheering on the runners.

Ken Saunders, Race Director, said: "It was fantastic to see so many people involved in this year's event which saw not only a record number of people taking part, but also a record number of volunteers without whom the race would not be possible. Thank you also to the sponsors for their generous support."

Cllr Maureen Attewell, the Council's Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing , said: "We are delighted that each year the event raises thousands of pounds for local charities and worthy causes and this year will be no exception."
