Food business approval

Do you need approval?

If your food business provides products containing foods of animal origin to other businesses (rather then direct to consumers), such as meat, fish, dairy products or eggs you will need European Commission approval.

You are required by law to get approval before processing products of animal origin.

If you are not sure if you need approval please email Environmental Health.

Requirements for approval

The requirements for food premises approval are above and beyond the general requirements for food businesses, as they involve higher risk operations.

Apply for food premises approval

To apply for approval online, please complete the Application for food premises approval form available through GOV.UK or email Environmental Health.

Once your application has been received, you will be visited at your premises and any work you need to do in order to comply with the regulations discussed. If your business has achieved the required standards, approval will be granted and you will be issued with a unique approval number, which makes up part of the identification mark that you will need to apply to your products.

Typical foods of animal origin

  • meat and poultry - whether fresh, frozen or cooked
  • meat products such as pies, sausage rolls, faggots, black pudding and bacon
  • raw or partially cooked minced meat or meat preparations such as sausages, burgers, marinated raw meat and kebab meat
  • fish and fish products such as fish fingers, prawns, lobsters, crabs and crayfish - whether dead or alive
  • live bivalve molluscs
  • ready meals containing fish or meat
  • milk and dairy products such as butter, cream, cheese, yoghurt, ice-cream, etc
  • frogs legs and snails
  • rendered animal fats and other animal by products such as gelatine, collagen, stomachs, bladders and intestines
  • honey and blood

Some premises may be exempt from being approved based on

  • the premises being retail or supplying other retailers on a marginal, localised and restricted basis
  • the supply of food of animal origin to the final consumer
  • the weekly tonnage of meat or meat products supplied
