Spelthorne Borough Council is sending a leaflet to all homes in the Borough this week outlining its concerns regarding Surrey County Council's proposal to abolish the county's 11 district and borough councils and replace them with one single unitary authority.

Spelthorne is concerned that the proposal represents a significant threat to the delivery of local services and democracy and that Surrey County Council has failed to consult with residents and local councils.

Leader of the Spelthorne Borough Council, Cllr John Boughtflower, said: "We have already heard from residents concerned about the single unitary proposal and the impact on their local services. We share that concern. At Spelthorne, we pride ourselves on our strong financial performance and local service offering, including our community centres, waste collections, parks maintenance and meals on wheels services, to name a few. We are currently at the front-line of democracy, with Councillors and staff who have the local knowledge, drive and commitment to make things better.

"Whilst Spelthorne Borough Council is not opposed to change, we believe that Surrey's proposals are not properly thought through and that we must evaluate other options for local government reorganisation in Surrey.

"Whatever way forward we choose to take, any changes must ensure that the needs of our residents are put first and that the best interests of local areas, as well as those of different groups within our communities, are represented. In the meantime, we strongly urge Government Ministers and MPs to keep an open mind and consider all proposals when deciding the future of local government in Surrey. We will ensure that our residents are consulted in an open and transparent manner and are kept fully informed on progress with this work."

The Council is holding an Extraordinary Council Meeting at 6pm on Thursday 24 September to outline their formal stance on Surrey County Council's proposal. Residents can watch the meeting live on YouTube (search Spelthorne TV).
