Councillors making donation at Food Bank

Spelthorne Borough Council has made donations, totalling £71,000 to support local charities and food banks in the Borough which have all played a vital role in supporting vulnerable residents over the past few months.

The money has been granted to the Council by Defra with the aim of providing additional funding to support residents experiencing financial hardship because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Council elected to use the funds to support the ongoing work in the community carried out by our local food banks, an information and advice service to be delivered by Citizens Advice and by working with Voluntary Support North Surrey to administer a hardship fund.

Cllr Maureen Attewell, Deputy Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Community Wellbeing, said: "I want to place on record this Council's appreciation for all the fine work these organisations have been doing and continue to do - they are true local heroes. Voluntary Support North Surrey worked closely with us at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic and helped us target our support services at those who needed it most. Citizens Advice provide essential support to many who are going through hardship and are a vital cog in society. Our food banks continue to provide essential support for those in need and we are incredibly grateful for their work. I look forward to continuing to work closely with all of these organisations as we strive to provide a better Spelthorne for everyone once this pandemic is over."
