Electoral Register

In the autumn of each year every property will be sent a Household Enquiry form (or canvass form) to confirm or update those who need to be registered. Each household is required by law to complete and return this form. The information required includes the names of every eligible person over the age of 16/17. These Young Voters are registered along with their date of birth so they can vote from their 18th birthday. The register is published on 1 December.

There are various other categories of people who can register in a different way. For example British Citizens who are resident abroad; homeless; patients in mental hospitals and remand prisoners.

If your circumstances change for example you move house or change your name after 1 December, you will need to register using the Gov.uk website.

There are two versions of the Electoral Register - the Full Register and the Open Register.

A copy of the full register is held at the Council Office's and is available to view by appointment under supervision by one of our team. During the busy election period, this may not be possible. No copying of this register is allowed and the information it contains cannot be used for marketing purposes. If you would like to view your entry in the register, please contact the Electoral Registration Office to arrange an appointment. However, you can call us and we may be able to provide this information over the telephone.

The full electoral register

The full electoral register is a list of addresses and the names of the eligible voters who are living in the Spelthorne area. You cannot vote if your name does not appear on the register.  The register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure eligible people can vote. It is also used for other limited purposes specified in law such as detecting crime (eg fraud), calling people for jury service and checking credit applications.

The open register

The open register is an extract of the electoral register, but is not used for elections. It can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for any purpose including commercial activities such as marketing.  For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details. If you require a copy of the open register please contact the Elections Office for a quote.

Your details will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed.

Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote or your credit application.

If you would like to request that your details are not included in the open register, please complete and return the pdf icon Application to Amend Opt-Out Form. [134kb].

Further information about the full electoral register and the open register can be found on the Gov.uk website.
