Standing as a Candidate

If you wish to stand as a candidate for the General Election on Thursday 12 December, please download and complete the following forms and call 01784 446238 to make an appointment with the Electoral Services Manager, Jayne McEwan.

Please note, we will be republishing the Electoral Register in the early part of week commencing 4 November 2019 and at this point the elector numbers will be updated.


If you have not registered or have moved you will need to register prior to the election. The deadline to register is Tuesday 26 November 2019 and should be made via  However you may be required to provide documentary evidence to support your application so please register in good time.

Poll cards

Every registered elector in Spelthorne who is eligible to vote in this election will be sent a poll card confirming which method of voting they have in place, eg by postal vote, by proxy or in person at the polling station. These pollcards will be sent soon. Please check the details and let us know of any problems as soon as you receive it. 

Different ways to vote

There are three ways to vote, in person at the polling station, by post or using a proxy voter.

Postal voting

Applications can be made for a single election, for a specified period or permanently. You can apply for a postal vote at any time until 5pm on Tuesday 26 November 2019. The deadline for making changes to or cancelling existing arrangements is also 5pm on Tuesday 26 November 2019.  All postal voting packs will be dispatched around 22 November 2019 although this is subject to change and are sent by Royal Mail 1st class. Postal packs for late postal vote applications will be sent later so please ensure you apply as early as possible to enable us to get your ballot papers to you when required.

Completed postal votes need to be returned to the Returning Officer by 10pm on Thursday 12 December 2019. If you miss the post you can hand your completed postal vote into any polling station in the ward or the Council Offices at Knowle Green. Any postal votes placed in the Royal Mail posting box on polling day, will not be counted.

Voting in person at a polling station

Polling stations will be open from 7am - 10pm on Thursday 12 December 2019. Details of your polling station can be found on your poll card or on My Spelthorne.  Please check carefully where your polling station is located as it may have changed since you last voted.

Proxy voting

This means appointing someone to vote on your behalf at your polling station.

You can apply for a proxy vote at any time until 5pm Wednesday 4 December 2019. You will need to tell the person you have appointed as your proxy which candidates you wish to vote for once the candidates' details have been made available. Your proxy must be registered and eligible to vote in these elections.
