Since the summer of 2024, Spelthorne Borough Council has embraced a dynamic, community-focused approach to create the Spelthorne Design Code. This Code is designed to establish new design standards that will not only guide future development across the Borough but also distinguish, elevate and celebrate its unique character. The Spelthorne Design Code team is now excited to present the draft Code for public engagement, marking a crucial opportunity for our community to influence the Borough's built environment.
In the upcoming public engagement opportunity, we will present the draft Design Code on our digital engagement hub. Residents will have the opportunity to see how community feedback has influenced this draft. The engagement will cover topics like what is in the Spelthorne Design Code and the design process for future development, borough-wide vision, and community priorities. Participants will also be able to understand the design requirements that will guide future development in Spelthorne by reviewing plans and graphics.
From 18 March to 8 April, the public engagement will open, and we encourage everyone to participate. This is a chance to influence how Spelthorne grows and develops for generations to come. We encourage residents to sign up on our homepage to receive updates and details on how to take part. For ongoing updates and to have your say on the draft Design Code, please visit the Spelthorne Design Code Engagement Hub.
The development of the Spelthorne Design Code has been shaped by extensive community engagement across multiple stages. This includes collaboration with the dedicated Design Code Citizens' Panel, outreach to schools and youth clubs throughout the borough, and location-specific feedback gathered through an online interactive map, as well as in-person and digital walking tours. These efforts have resulted in a draft Design Code that reflects the collective vision of the community, ensuring that future development aligns with local needs and priorities.
Through extensive community engagement, several key priorities have emerged to guide the draft Spelthorne Design Code. Preserving green spaces has been a major focus, with strong support for nature conservation efforts and initiatives to enhance local biodiversity. Sustainability and resilience have also been highlighted as essential, with residents advocating for flood-resilient designs and eco-friendly development that support long-term sustainability.
Improving accessibility and safety is another crucial matter, with community feedback emphasising the need for better pedestrian pathways, expanded cycling routes and enhanced public transport options to create a more connected and inclusive Borough.
Lastly, there is a strong desire for community-centric design, ensuring that new developments contribute to a sense of belonging, preserve local character and foster vibrant, people-focused spaces. These priorities will shape the draft Spelthorne Design Code.
The input from the community is invaluable. Together, we can shape a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive future for Spelthorne and would like to thank Spelthorne's local people for their contributions to help shape this important Design Code so far.
