Shepperton resident convicted under Public Order Act

Jason Searle, from Shepperton, was found guilty and convicted of causing a council officer harassment, alarm or distress, contrary to section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986, at Staines Magistrates Court on 16 October.

On 8 May 2024 a council officer issued a Temporary Stop Notice to Mr Searle at his home address when a physical altercation took place, in which the officer was thrown to the ground and verbally abused.

The court ordered Mr Searle to pay £1,000 in costs and a £200 fine.

The Chair of Spelthorne Borough Council’s Corporate Policy and Resources Committee, Cllr Joanne Sexton, said: "No council officer should ever be subjected to violence or abuse simply for carrying out their duties. This conviction sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will always take appropriate action to protect our staff and uphold the law."
