Enjoy Fireworks safely:
Fireworks are a wonderful way to celebrate, but they must be handled with care. Here are some key safety tips to help everyone enjoy the evening responsibly:
Firework and Bonfire Safety
• sparklers can reach temperatures five times hotter than cooking oil, always wear gloves and supervise children.
• light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, then stand well back.
• never throw a firework.
• dispose of used sparklers in a bucket of water, they stay hot long after the spark has gone out.
• never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries.
• build bonfires well away from buildings, fences and hedges, and check for small animals like hedgehogs before lighting.
RSPCA’s 5 Top Tips for a Pet-Friendly Fireworks Night
Fireworks can be stressful for pets - a little preparation can make all the difference.
- create a safe space for your dog: Fill it with their favourite toys and other things they love, and with time, dogs can learn that this is a safe place that they can go to when fireworks go off. It's important that your dog has access to this safe haven at all times – even when you're not at home.
- move your dog to the safe haven each evening before the fireworks begin: Make sure there are things for you to do too, so your dog isn't left alone.
- close windows and curtains to muffle the sounds: If possible, blackout your dog’s safe haven too, so they can't see any flashes from outside.
- walk your dog during daylight hours: This helps you avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off.
- ask your vet about pheromone diffusers: These disperse calming chemicals into the room and may be a good option for your dog. In some cases, your vet may even prescribe medication.
- make sure your dog is microchipped: In case they bolt and escape during the commotion (by law, your dog should already be microchipped).

What can be done about firework noise?
From 7 August 2004, Regulation 7 of the Fireworks Regulations 2004 came into effect, which means that it is now a criminal offence to use 'adult fireworks' during the night hours of 11pm to 7am, except on a 'permitted firework night'.
These are:
- Chinese New Year - 11pm to 1am
- 5 November - 11pm to 12am
- Day of Diwali - 11pm to 1am
- New Year's Eve - 11pm to 1am
- Enforcement of Regulation 7 is the responsibility of the local police
