Remember, remember!

fireworks
Love them or loathe them, as Bonfire Night approaches it’s important to enjoy fireworks safely and look out for pets, wildlife and neighbours. Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and serious harm to people and animals. They can also pose a significant fire risk, so please take care and follow safety advice.

Enjoy Fireworks safely:

Fireworks are a wonderful way to celebrate, but they must be handled with care. Here are some key safety tips to help everyone enjoy the evening responsibly:

 Firework and Bonfire Safety
•  sparklers can reach temperatures five times hotter than cooking oil, always wear gloves and supervise children.
•  light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, then stand well back.
•  never throw a firework.
•  dispose of used sparklers in a bucket of water, they stay hot long after the spark has gone out.
•  never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries.
•  build bonfires well away from buildings, fences and hedges, and check for small animals like hedgehogs before lighting.

RSPCA’s 5 Top Tips for a Pet-Friendly Fireworks Night
Fireworks can be stressful for pets - a little preparation can make all the difference.

  1. create a safe space for your dog: Fill it with their favourite toys and other things they love, and with time, dogs can learn that this is a safe place that they can go to when fireworks go off. It's important that your dog has access to this safe haven at all times – even when you're not at home.
  2. move your dog to the safe haven each evening before the fireworks begin: Make sure there are things for you to do too, so your dog isn't left alone.
  3. close windows and curtains to muffle the sounds: If possible, blackout your dog’s safe haven too, so they can't see any flashes from outside.
  4. walk your dog during daylight hours: This helps you avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off.
  5. ask your vet about pheromone diffusers: These disperse calming chemicals into the room and may be a good option for your dog. In some cases, your vet may even prescribe medication.
  6. make sure your dog is microchipped: In case they bolt and escape during the commotion (by law, your dog should already be microchipped).

By following these tips, you’ll help ensure a more relaxed and safe evening for everyone, furry friends included.

What can be done about firework noise?

From 7 August 2004, Regulation 7 of the Fireworks Regulations 2004 came into effect, which means that it is now a criminal offence to use 'adult fireworks' during the night hours of 11pm to 7am, except on a 'permitted firework night'.

These are:

  • Chinese New Year - 11pm to 1am
  • 5 November - 11pm to 12am
  • Day of Diwali - 11pm to 1am
  • New Year's Eve - 11pm to 1am
  • Enforcement of Regulation 7 is the responsibility of the local police
