Remembrance Day - Tuesday 11 November
The service will begin at 10.45am, and all members of the community are warmly invited to attend.
This year’s ceremony holds special significance as it marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, commemorating the end of the Second World War. Ahead of the service, 429 memorial crosses will be placed outside the Council Offices in memory of the men and women from the Spelthorne area who lost their lives during World War II.
The list of names was compiled by local military historian Phil Webb and his wife Eileen Webb, working with Spelthorne Museum. Inspired by the museum’s publication Spelthorne Remembered WW1, which recorded the area’s First World War casualties, Phil and Eileen set out to do the same for those who fell in the Second World War. Their research drew on records from Spelthorne Museum archives, local churches, war memorials, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and copies of the Middlesex Chronicle held by the museum.
Each cross has been individually labelled with the name of a fallen service member by cadets from the 398 (Staines & Egham) Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets, 195 Staines Army Cadets, and Spelthorne Police Cadets. Some of these cadets will also attend the service to place the final crosses during the ceremony.
The Mayor of Spelthorne Borough Council, Cllr John Doran said, “Remembrance Day is an important time for us all to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many. This years’ service has special meaning as we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War. We are grateful to everyone who has helped to honour those from Spelthorne who gave their lives for our freedom.”
All are welcome to join the Council and local community in this act of remembrance and reflection.
