Spelthorne Borough Council calls for constructive action on Stanwell Hotel use

News update
The Home Office will determine the outcome regarding the future use of the Stanwell Hotel independently.

Whilst they are not obligated to consult with the Council or consider its representations, they are now actively engaging with the authority, and the Council is determined to make the most of this opportunity to influence decisions and secure positive changes.

At the Extraordinary Council Meeting held on 7 August 2025, Spelthorne Borough Council passed a motion calling on the Home Office to:

  1. Immediately reconsider its plans to utilise the Stanwell Hotel to house adult male-only asylum seekers,
  2. Actively consult and work in partnership with the Local Authority,
  3. Continue engaging with key stakeholders and support the existing client group of families and single female asylum seekers at the Stanwell Hotel, and
  4. Give due regard to public concerns, local services, and the local community.

During the meeting, an amendment was proposed to call upon the Home Office for the permanent closure of the Stanwell Hotel for housing asylum seekers. This was debated at length, though most councillors voted against this amendment as they felt that demanding permanent closure could harm ongoing talks with the Home Office to find practical solutions that balance community concerns with the needs of those families already living there.

Spelthorne Borough Council Leader Joanne Sexton commented:

"The Council recognises the significant concerns expressed by residents and local stakeholders. However, we were also mindful that the previous government entered into a contractual arrangement with the owners of the Stanwell Hotel.

Our priority is to secure a meaningful and constructive response from the Home Office. The agreed motion sends a clear and united message that we do not support the proposed change in use of the hotel and that any decisions must take full account of the impact on the community."
