Armed Forces Week

Spelthorne Borough Council has marked the start of Armed Forces Week with a flag raising ceremony outside its offices in Knowle Green, Staines-upon-Thames.

Armed Forces Week provides the opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.

The week of events and celebrations ends with Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June and there are many ways for people, communities and organisations across the country to show their support and get involved. Use the interactive map to find your nearest event.

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Sandra Dunn, said: “Armed forces week is our opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans, and cadets. Today, we honoured the bravery and commitment of service personnel in His Majesty’s Navy, Army and Airforce past and present. It is a public demonstration of our continued support for all that the Armed Forces continue to do for us and the sacrifices they and their families continue to make.”

Spelthorne Council is very proud to have been honoured with the prestigious Gold Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which was launched in 2014 to recognise organisations which demonstrate support for the Defence community.

The Gold Award is only given to those organisations which proactively support the Armed Forces community and encourage others to do the same. Companies should have ‘forces-friendly’ recruitment and selection processes and in the case of local authorities, offer services which take account of their unique situation.
