Council Tax Single Person Discount Review- Why you’re being contacted

Spelthorne Borough Council is writing to residents currently receiving the Single Person Discount on their Council Tax because of information shared through the National Fraud Initiative (NFI).

The information has come from the National Fraud Initiative which is an exercise that matches electronic data within and between public and private sector bodies to prevent and detect fraud. All council’s take part in this exercise to ensure records held are correct. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-fraud-initiative.

Letters are issued to council taxpayers currently in receipt of the single person discount to clarify if there may be a second adult in the property.  For example, children who have turned 18 were this information has not been disclosed to the council tax team. The letters have been issued to clarify those who are still entitled to the discount or if they may need to apply for a different discount/disregard to suit the circumstances of the household. 

We will then update the National Fraud Initiative records to ensure the information is updated.

If you have received a letter, please complete the form as soon as possible and return to the council tax department either by post or email to ctax@spelthorne.gov.uk. 

If you are still entitled to the single person discount this will remain on your account, if for whatever reason, you have further adults in the property please advise of their circumstances for example, student, severally mentally impaired, career etc, please state this on the form. If you are in any doubt, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01784 451499 where we will be able to advise further.

The purpose of the letter is to confirm whether the household is still entitled to the Single Person Discount, or whether a different discount or disregard may now apply based on your circumstances.
