Protecting our parks and open spaces this summer

We’re asking residents and visitors to help us look after Spelthorne’s beautiful parks and green spaces following several recent incidents.

At Dumsey Meadows SSSI, there have been reports of unauthorised barbecues, fires, littering and tents being left on site. This includes damage to trees and vegetation, and the unsafe disposal of hot coals in dry grass and near trees—posing a serious fire risk.

In Sunbury Park, a fire was recently reported near a tree stump, believed to have been caused by discarded cigarette materials. Thanks to swift action by officers and the fire service, the situation was made safe.

🔥 Help prevent fires

With the current dry weather, even small actions can have serious consequences. Please:

  • Do not light fires or barbecues in parks or open spaces
  • Dispose of cigarettes safely and responsibly
  • Take all litter home with you
  • Avoid leaving glass bottles, as they can magnify sunlight and start fires

🐄 Cattle returning soon to Sunbury Park

The return of grazing cattle to Sunbury Park has been slightly delayed due to the hot weather, but they will be back soon.

When they return, please remember:

  • Keep dogs on leads around livestock
  • Always close gates securely
  • Give cattle plenty of space

These measures help protect both visitors and the animals, as well as support vital conservation grazing.
