Share your views on proposed new multi-use games area in Memorial Gardens
The Council believes this part of Memorial Gardens is currently underutilised and that introducing a new community sports facility would help bring new energy, activity and life to the area, creating a more vibrant and welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.
The proposal would be for the MUGA to be managed on a semi-informal basis, with access gates opened and closed in line with the borough’s park gates.
The Council has launched a public survey to gather feedback on the plans and is encouraging residents, local businesses and visitors to share their views before any decisions are made.
Earlier this year, the Council sought feedback on a separate proposal to install a children’s playground on the site formerly occupied by the Five Swimmers sculpture in Memorial Gardens. Feedback from that consultation is currently under review.
The proposed multi-use games area (MUGA) is a separate project and would be located on the green space next to Riverside Car Park.
The survey will run until 21 June.

Cllr John Turner, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee, said: “We want Memorial Gardens to continue to be a welcoming and enjoyable space for everyone. The proposed multi-use games area would provide valuable new opportunities for exercise, recreation and social interaction, particularly for young people and families. We are keen to hear from residents and encourage everyone to take part in the survey and share their views.”
Feedback from the survey will help inform the Council’s next steps for the project.
