Spelthorne Borough Council receives letter from the Home Office on asylum accommodation

News update
Spelthorne Borough Council has received a response from the Home Office following concerns raised by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Joanne Sexton, about asylum accommodation in the borough. In its letter, the Government reiterates that the long-term use of hotels to house asylum seekers is not acceptable and confirms its commitment to end the use of asylum hotels by the end of the current Parliament. The Home Office says achieving this will require the procurement of a range of accommodation types across the UK to reduce reliance on hotels, lower costs to taxpayers and ensure placements remain safe and appropriate.

The department also explains that movements of asylum seekers between accommodation sites are a routine part of the national system and may take place for operational, safeguarding or capacity reasons.

Responding to questions from the Council about the potential use of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), the Home Office confirms it cannot rule out their use, provided they meet contractual, safety and suitability standards.

Cllr Joanne Sexton, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, said:

“I welcome the Government’s response and its commitment to end the long-term use of asylum hotels. However, the possibility that other accommodation types, including HMOs, could still be used in Stanwell is concerning.

The Council will continue to press the Home Office for clarity and proper engagement to ensure the wellbeing of our communities is protected.”
