Spelthorne Remembers Holocaust Memorial Day

hmd
Spelthorne Borough Council has marked Holocaust Memorial Day by raising the Holocaust Memorial flag outside the Council Offices, Knowle Green.

Holocaust Memorial Day, observed each year on 27 January, provides an opportunity to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of others persecuted and killed by the Nazi regime. The day also commemorates victims of more recent genocides, including those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The commemoration serves as a powerful reminder that genocide and persecution often begin with everyday acts of prejudice, discrimination and dehumanisation. By learning from history, communities can work together to challenge hatred and help prevent such atrocities from happening again.

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr John Doran said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us of the devastating consequences of hatred, racism and intolerance. We must never forget the six million Jews and all others who lost their lives. Remembering the past helps us stand together against prejudice today and reinforces the importance of treating others with dignity, respect and compassion.”

How residents can take part

Residents were encouraged to join the national Light the Darkness moment at 8.00pm on 27 January by lighting a candle and placing it safely in their window. This act of remembrance helps to:

  • Honour those who were murdered simply for who they were
  • Show solidarity with communities affected by hatred and persecution
  • Reaffirm a shared commitment to stand against discrimination and bullying

Become part of the conversation about Light the darkness online by sharing a photo of your candle and tagging us on Facebook or Instagram. Use the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness.
