Stay safe - be water aware

water safety
With the hot weather, we are reminding residents to take particular care near the water.

Open water can be very cold all year round and there are often hidden dangers, such as currents and rubbish.

Across the country, around 400 people die every year from drowning as a result of an accident in or around water, with thousands more suffering severe and often life-changing injuries. Many of these occur as a result of a trip or fall into water or underestimating the effect that swimming in cold open water can have.

If you are on the water and get into difficulty, we urge you to keep calm and float. This will allow you to call for help. If you come across an emergency, dial 999 and ask for fire and ambulance services. If it safe to do so, reach the person using a stick, pole or clothing to pull them to the water's edge. Always lie down to do this for your own safety.
