Spelthorne Borough Council receives Home Office update on Stanwell Hotel

News update
Spelthorne Borough Council met with representatives from both the Home Office and Surrey Police regarding the ongoing situation at the Stanwell Hotel.

Today, Friday 22 August, the Home Office has confirmed to the Council that a formal written response will be provided by Dame Angela Eagle DBE MP, Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum next week. This follows recent correspondence sent by Cllr Joanne Sexton, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, on behalf of concerned local residents.

There have been reports in the community suggesting an increase in the number of male occupants at the hotel in recent days. The Home Office, however, has categorically stated that this information is incorrect. They confirmed that, since a decision was made by the Home Office on 1 August to pause any changes to the resident mix at the hotel, no additional single adult males have been moved into the facility.

Cllr Joanne Sexton, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, said:

"We understand and share the concerns of Stanwell residents and are committed to representing their voice at the highest levels. The Council remains resolute in its stance against the Home Office's decision, and we continue to pursue all available legal and political avenues. We urge residents to continue their protest peacefully and respectfully, as we work together towards a fair and safe resolution for our community."

A further Extraordinary Council Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday 4 September at 7.00pm. The Agenda will be published one week in advance and will be available to view on the Council's website: Agenda for Council on Thursday, 4 September 2025, 7.00 pm - Spelthorne Borough Council

The Council continues to take external legal advice and remains firmly opposed to the Home Office's decision to change the use of Stanwell Hotel from accommodating families and single women to housing single adult males only.

The Council thanks residents for their continued patience and engagement as it works to ensure transparency and accountability in this matter. We would like to reassure residents we will not be removing the various flags on display, unless they are inflammatory or obstructive.
