Street drinking PSPO

Spelthorne Borough Council is updating residents on the outcome of our PSPO consultation in relation to street drinking.

Spelthorne Borough Council ran a survey asking for feedback about implementing a Public Space Protection Order in relation to street drinking between 23 September and 21 October 2022.

The consultation was shared widely across all the Council's digital platforms and also promoted on Borough noticeboards and in the Elmsleigh Centre in Staines.

The population of Spelthorne is approximately 95,000. 65 responses were received equating to 0.06% of the population actively engaged.

33% of responders were from Sunbury

18% of responders were from Ashford

4% of responders were from Shepperton

3% of responders were from Laleham

1.5% of responders were from Halliford and Stanwell.

In response to concerns about street drinking linked to antisocial-behaviour:-

89% of responders stated that this was a concern with 78% stating that they had witnessed this behaviour in the past year.

70% of responders did not feel that the police and local authority were effectively managing the problem.

The Council also consulted with police statistical data, which showed that between 1 April 2022 and 30 September 2022 there were five cases of nuisance street drinking.

Based on the lack of public interest and the low cases reported to the police, there are insufficient grounds for the implementation of a PSPO to tackle street drinking and the data suggests that this is not a priority issue for the public.

Residents can view the report and the summary of results in the attached documents.
