Strategic Land Availability Assessment

Previously known as the SHLAA

Councils are required to prepare a Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SLAA) in order to have a good understanding of which land in the Borough may be available and suitable to help meet its identified development needs.  The SLAA will inform the review of our Local Plan.

SLAA Methodology Update 2025

Spelthorne and Runnymede Borough Councils are working together to update the joint Strategic Land Availability Assessment methodology. The joint methodology will help to ensure a consistent approach to how land supply across the area will be considered. The draft methodology update sets out the approach both authorities will take to appraise potential sites/land for housing and economic development to inform the preparation of both authorities' Local Plans.

The methodology has been updated in order to remain consistent with recent National Planning Policy Framework and Planning Practice Guidance updates.

Consultation on the draft SLAA Methodology Update 2025 has now closed. Comments are now being considered and the Methodology is being updated where appropriate.

SLAA methodology

The Council has prepared a joint SLAA methodology in partnership with Runnymede Borough Council, updated in December 2021. This can be viewed below:

SLAA 2022

The updated 2022 Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SLAA) is now available to view below.  The SLAA is a live document, therefore will be regularly reviewed.  Whilst the appendices within the document identify the sites that we have assessed, the accompanying site assessments will be available to view on request from the Strategic Planning Team.
