Councils are required to prepare a Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SLAA) in order to have a good understanding of which land in the Borough may be available and suitable to help meet its identified development needs. The SLAA will inform the review of our Local Plan.
The Council produced a draft updated Joint Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SLAA) Methodology for Runnymede and Spelthorne Borough Councils. This was consulted upon between 25 June and 22 July 2025. Following the review of the comments received in relation to the draft Methodology, updates have been made to the draft version and therefore the final version of the Strategic Land Availability Assessment Methodology can be found:
The joint methodology update sets out the consistent approach both authorities will take to consider land supply across the area, which includes appraising potential sites/land for housing and economic development to inform the preparation of both authorities' Local Plans. The methodology has been updated in order to remain consistent with recent National Planning Policy Framework and Planning Practice Guidance updates.
The Council has prepared a joint SLAA methodology in partnership with Runnymede Borough Council, updated in December 2021. This can be viewed below:
The updated 2022 Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SLAA) is now available to view below. The SLAA is a live document, therefore will be regularly reviewed. Whilst the appendices within the document identify the sites that we have assessed, the accompanying site assessments will be available to view on request from the Strategic Planning Team.
If you would like to promote a site to the Council please see our Call for Sites webpage
The mapped 2020 SLAA sites are available to view in the context of the Borough, using the 'My Maps' tool on Customer Portal.
