Plans are underway to develop a Business Improvement District (BID) in Ashford. A BID is a business-led initiative that invest in projects and services to enhance the local trading environment. Engagement with town centre businesses will be staring over the next few weeks to gather views and shape a business plan. Businesses will vote on whether to implement the BID at the end of 2026, which could bring benefits such as improved marketing, events and safety/security measures.

What is a bid?
A BID is an independent, business-led, not for profit organisation providing additional services and improvements in a defined area of a town.
The BID levy area
Businesses within the defined area that are eligible pay a small levy proportionate to their rateable value to fund BID activities.
BID services and initiatives
BIDs must deliver services and initiatives as outlined in the agreed priorities published in their business plan / formal proposal document.
BID 5-Year operating period
A BID operates for a maximum of a 5-year period before having to go to a ballot when businesses decide whether to continue with another BID.
Business-led board
BIDs are independent from Local Authorities and are run by a business-led board of directors, selected from the business sectors represented in the town.
BIDs across the UK
There are over 330 active BIDs operating in the UK, with nearly 90% deciding to renew their local BID after their first 5-year BID period.
