Disabled Facilities Grants are available to help fund the cost of aids and adaptations to enable a disabled person to live independently in their own home and support the provision of decent, healthy, and safe housing within the Borough.
We provide grants up to £30,000 to help to provide suitable facilities and adaptations.
Approval for the grant must be given before starting work.
Eligibility
Anyone who is registered disabled, or eligible for registration as a disabled person.
Some works, not all, are subject to a means test. The scheme is similar to the Housing Benefit's means test, but some benefit payments can be disregarded.
Eligible work
- providing wet rooms and adapted toilets
- helping access around the home e.g. widening doors, stairlifts and through floor lifts
- work to help access to homes and gardens e.g. ramps
- making a dwelling safe as the disabled client has behavioural problems
- kitchen adaptations for access and wheelchair users
- improving access around the home to help disabled occupants to care for others
Applying for a grant
Applicants should first arrange for an assessment by an Occupational Therapist. These can be contacted via adult social care. There is usually a wait for these assessments. Until an OT has confirmed your eligibility the DFG team cannot assist you.
To refer into adult social care for an assessment by an Occupational Therapist please call 0300 200 1005.
